How to Grow Sugar Maple
The short answer
Sugar maple (Acer saccharum) gives the brilliant orange-red fall color, but it is site-sensitive. It wants rich, moist, well-drained (mesic) soil and does poorly on hot, dry, disturbed, or compacted urban sites, so match it to a good site rather than forcing it.
Its two biggest killers in the landscape are road salt and pavement. Streetside sugar maples are very low in resistance to both, and salt plus compacted soil are the two predominant causes of the maple decline seen on thousands of street trees. Keep it back from salted roads and driveways and protect its root zone from compaction.
To tell it apart from the invasive Norway maple that is often mistaken for it, break a leaf off at the stem: Norway maple oozes milky white sap, while sugar maple's sap is clear and watery.
Give it the right site: rich, moist, uncompacted soil
Sugar maple is a forest tree of good ground, and it expects that in the landscape too. Compared with the more urban-tough Norway maple, sugar maple is more limited to rich, mesic sites, meaning soils that stay evenly moist, drain well, and are not baked or disturbed. On thin, dry, or heavily compacted sites it struggles and declines.
So the site decision is most of the battle. Plant sugar maple in deep, fertile, well-drained soil with room for roots to spread, ideally in a lawn or yard rather than a narrow tree lawn between sidewalk and curb. Mulch the root zone to keep soil cool and moist, and keep foot traffic, parking, and construction off the roots, since compaction collapses the soil pore space roots need for air and water.
Its two enemies: salt and pavement
The reason so many street-planted sugar maples fail comes down to two linked stresses. Work published in Arboriculture and Urban Forestry on maple decline found that after examining many thousands of streetside sugar maples, the two predominant causes of decline were salt and pavement, and that sugar maple is very low in resistance to both of these stresses.
The two even compound each other: salt damages soil structure by breaking the bonds that hold soil aggregates together, so the pore spaces collapse into a sodium-driven compaction that further restricts roots. The practical rule for a homeowner is to keep sugar maple well away from roads and driveways that get winter de-icing salt, avoid piling salted snow on its root zone, and never let its soil be paved over or compacted. Where salt and compaction are unavoidable, this is the wrong tree for the spot.
Sugar maple vs. Norway maple: the milky-sap test
Sugar maple is frequently confused with Norway maple (Acer platanoides), an aggressive non-native that is invasive in many regions, so knowing which you have matters. The fastest field test comes from the University of Maryland Extension and others: detach a leaf at its petiole (the stem) and watch the cut. Norway maple exudes a distinct milky white sap; sugar maple's sap is clear and watery.
A few backups confirm it. Norway maple leaves are typically broader than long with more pointed, spreading lobe tips, and its fall color skews yellow, while sugar maple turns orange to red. If you are choosing a tree to plant, favor the native sugar maple on a good site over Norway maple, which self-seeds heavily and displaces native plants.
