How to Grow Mushrooms at Home on Logs
The short answer
The classic home method is log cultivation: drill holes in fresh-cut hardwood logs, insert spawn (cultured fungus), then stack the logs in a shaded 'laying yard' to incubate for about a year before they begin fruiting. Shiitake (Lentinula edodes) is the most reliable log crop.
Once producing, a log fruits biannually for three to four years, yielding upwards of 8 ounces at each flush. Oyster (Pleurotus) and lion's mane (Hericium) can also be grown on stumps or standing 'totem' logs. Kits are a simpler indoor starting point, but logs give the longest-running outdoor harvest.
The log method
- 1Inoculate โ Drill holes in fresh-cut hardwood logs and place spawn into the holes.
- 2Incubate โ Stack logs in a shaded laying yard for about a year before fruiting begins.
Yield and species
- A shiitake log fruits biannually for three to four years, upwards of 8 ounces per flush.
- Shiitake is the most reliable outdoor log crop.
- Oyster and lion's mane grow well on stumps or standing 'totem' logs.
โ Prepackaged indoor kits are the easiest way to try mushroom growing before committing to logs.
