How to Grow Luffa Gourds

The short answer

A loofah sponge is simply an overripe luffa gourd dried on the vine. Luffa needs a long, warm season โ€” 140 or more frost-free days, and often 150 to 200 days from seed to a finished sponge. In cold zones (USDA 5 and lower) start seeds indoors weeks before the last frost; in zone 6 and up you can direct-sow into warm soil after frost.

Give luffa full sun and a strong, tall trellis or fence โ€” vines can run 25 to 30 feet, and support keeps the gourds straight and off the ground so they don't rot. To harvest, let the gourd dry on the vine until the skin is loose and dry, then peel it off, shake out the seeds, and dry the fibrous sponge fully.

Season and starting seeds

  • Needs 140+ frost-free days; often 150 to 200 days seed to sponge.
  • Zone 5 and lower: start seeds indoors a few weeks before last frost; harden off before transplanting.
  • Zone 6 and higher: direct-sow into warm ground after frost has passed.

Support and harvest

  1. 1Trellis โ€” Grow in full sun on a sturdy trellis or fence; vines can reach 25 to 30 feet and gourds hang straighter off the ground.
  2. 2Dry on the vine โ€” Leave gourds until the skin is loose and dry, then peel it off to reveal the fibrous sponge.
  3. 3Finish drying โ€” Shake out seeds and let the sponge dry and harden fully before use.
