Where it grows and how to plant

• Light: full sun
• Soil: moist, fast-draining, well-aerated (Yoshino prefers acidic)
• Kwanzan: upright spreading, ~30 ft tall x 20 ft wide, double pink flowers
• Water when weekly rainfall is under about 1 inch; mulch to hold moisture and protect the trunk

Pruning basics and timing

Prune only to remove dead or diseased wood and awkward crossing or rubbing branches, and do it immediately after flowering so you do not sacrifice the following year's bloom.

Lifespan and common problems

Ornamental cherries tend to be short-lived, about 20 to 25 years. Drought, trunk damage, compacted or poorly drained soil, defoliation, and winter injury all shorten their lives, so protect the trunk and keep the root zone healthy.

→ Cherries are Prunus and their foliage and pits contain compounds that can be toxic to pets and livestock; check ASPCA or your Extension office before planting where animals browse.
