Grafted Tomatoes: Worth the Extra Cost or Not?
The short answer
Grafting joins a good-flavored fruiting top (the scion) onto a vigorous, disease-resistant rootstock. The evidence says the payoff depends entirely on your situation. Where soil-borne diseases, nematodes, or an inability to rotate crops are the problem, Extension trials report large yield gains, and grafting can rescue a bed you otherwise couldn't use for tomatoes.
In healthy soil with no disease pressure, the benefit shrinks. One University of Maryland trial found grafted plants yielded 15.2 pounds per plant versus 13.7 for non-grafted, an 11 percent gain, yet the extra transplant cost still produced a small net loss per plant. For most home gardeners with decent soil and crop rotation, standard transplants are the better value; grafting earns its keep mainly in disease-ridden or space-limited situations.
When grafting clearly pays
Rootstocks are bred for resistance to soil diseases, nematodes, and stress, plus extra vigor. Alabama Cooperative Extension's grafted tomato trial found grafted plants outyielded non-grafted Red Snapper, with the best rootstock (Bowman) producing 13 pounds of marketable fruit per plant, about 3.75 pounds more per plant than non-grafted. Extension notes grafted plants are especially a viable solution for growers with limited space to rotate out of solanaceous crops. If you garden in the same bed year after year and battle wilts or root-knot nematode, grafting is the strongest tool short of moving the garden.
When it's probably not worth it
The economics change in clean soil. A University of Maryland Extension trial run without soil disease problems measured grafted plants at 15.2 pounds per plant against 13.7 pounds for non-grafted, an 11 percent increase, but the grower still calculated a loss of about 21 cents per grafted plant once the higher transplant cost was counted. The Alabama trial priced grafted transplants at $1.20 to $1.80 each, several times the cost of an ordinary plant. In good soil with rotation, that premium usually outweighs the modest yield gain.
โ If you want to try grafting cheaply, grafting your own plants or buying cooperatively drops the added cost to roughly 30 to 50 cents per plant in rootstock seed, which a small yield bump can cover.
How to decide for your garden
- Fighting verticillium/fusarium wilt, nematodes, or can't rotate: grafted plants are likely worth the premium.
- Healthy soil with normal rotation: standard transplants usually give better value.
- Short season or high tunnel where every plant must maximize output: the vigor can help.
- Whatever you buy, keep the graft union above the soil line so the scion never roots and defeats the purpose.
