What to Do in the Garden in June (UK)

Sow and plant

• Sow calabrese, turnips and kohl rabi now for an autumn crop.
• In southern England and south Wales, courgettes, marrows and pumpkins can still be sown outdoors in early June.
• Finish planting out any remaining hardened-off tender plants.

Prune and tidy

• Deadhead regularly through June — roses, cosmos, hardy geraniums, dahlias and sweet peas all keep producing blooms when spent flowers are removed.
• Thin out pears, plums, peaches, nectarines and apricots; thin apple fruits at the end of the month after the June drop.

Lawn and general care

• Hoe borders regularly to keep down weeds, choosing a dry day so weeds dry out on the soil surface.
• Keep new plantings and containers watered through dry spells.

Harvest

• Harvest lettuce, radish and other salads.
• Lift the first early potatoes.

Regional adjustment

The RHS is explicit that late outdoor sowing of courgettes, marrows and pumpkins in early June is for southern England and south Wales; gardeners in colder and more northern parts of the UK should have sown earlier under cover, and can expect harvests to start later.
